Melbourne Open House

Have you ever been walking along a city street and noticed an unusual looking building?  It is closed to the public.  You momentarily contemplate looking in the window, but decide against that as it could be just a little embarrassing if there is someone inside looking out.  And so you walk on by.  Well, now you may have the chance to have a peek inside – if the building is part of the Melbourne Open House program.

Melbourne Open House is an wonderful initiative for those curious about exploring our city buildings.  Over the weekend of 30-31 July 2011, there will be 75 buildings in the inner city open to the public.  There are free tours of the buildings provided by volunteers. There is also an activities program for kids.  Watch out for Mel the magical flying pig and Bonnie the Angel!

As for me, I am looking forward to peeking in the Mission to Seafarers, the Royal Melbourne Hospital Tunnels, and the garden designed by Jamie Durie on the rooftop of the Origin Energy building!

Melbourne Open House is run in association with the State of Design Festival.  See the Melbourne Open House website for details http://melbourneopenhouse.org

I did this the year before last – fantastic! The Mission to Seafarers is excellent. Donkey and Wheelhouse also worth a look. If you want to see the Manchester Unity building (which is amazing) make sure you get there very early.

Hi Bria, thanks for the tip about the Manchester Unity building. I better not sleep in! I will also check out the Donkey Wheel house. I have been into Kinfolk but not seen other parts of the building. I hear they will be celebrating their 120th birthday on Saturday 23 July 2011!
