“Paths of Hate” is a gripping film concerning the futility of war and focusing on two fighter pilots in a death duel, “The Show” features circus performers in their time off, and is a visual treat, “Meet Buck” is an amusing film about a reindeer, “Laszlo” is a poignant refugee story in collage, and “The Girl and the Hunter” is a modern day fable.  These were some of my favourite short films at the opening night gala screening of the Melbourne International Animation Festival #MIAF last night.  The films were really diverse, showcasing a range of animation from stop-motion to clay to computer.  They were drawn from around the world, but particularly Australia, Poland, England, France and the US.

MIAF is on from 19 to 26 June at the Australian Centre for Moving Image #ACMI in Federation Square. Tickets can be purchased at ACMI or via the MIAF website.  ACMI is selling festival passes.  If you’re an animation buff, MIAF is not to be missed.  There will be over 400 films screening!
